Nessell Cottage - Art Gallery

Set within the English countryside and surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this project reimagines an existing outbuilding as a bespoke art gallery and climate-controlled storage facility for a private collection.

The proposal replaces a modest shed structure with a carefully designed building that combines practical conservation requirements with a sensitive architectural response to its rural setting. The new facility incorporates specialist environmental controls, mechanical systems and secure storage conditions to ensure the long-term preservation of valuable artworks.

Drawing inspiration from traditional agricultural buildings and local vernacular architecture, the design has been developed to sit quietly within the landscape. Natural materials, simple forms and carefully considered proportions allow the building to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, creating a discreet presence within the garden.

Particular attention has been paid to the relationship between the building and the wider site, ensuring that views, planting and the character of the countryside remain at the forefront of the design approach.

The result is a highly functional and technically sophisticated building that provides museum-quality storage and display space while remaining deeply rooted in its rural context.
