Holland Park

Contemporary Classic Fusion

Located in the prestigious Holland Park area of London, this full refurbishment and rooftop extension transformed a traditional family house into a spacious, modern residence with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Designed to meet the needs of a growing family, the project blends classic architectural elements with contemporary design features. Architecture was undertaken by Studio Malaqueen, with Caroline Pillot Francois leading the bespoke interior design.

Rooftop Extension:

A significant component of this refurbishment is the addition of a rooftop extension, which seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture while adding two additional bedrooms and a bathroom. Designed to complement the building’s period façade, the extension features clean lines and modern finishes, utilizing materials like zinc cladding and large, energy-efficient windows. The extension was carefully crafted to enhance the building’s functionality without altering its original character.

The design maximizes natural light, with expansive windows providing panoramic views of Holland Park, while maintaining privacy for the family. The rooftop extension allowed the house to evolve into a more spacious and versatile home, increasing its capacity and value.

Interior Design:

Caroline Pillot Francois brought her refined, elegant style to the interior, creating a space that is both luxurious and functional. The interior design reflects a blend of modernity and timeless elegance, with a focus on high-quality finishes and custom details. Neutral tones, natural materials, and soft textures create a calming atmosphere throughout the home.

The living spaces are open and interconnected, featuring custom-built furniture and bespoke joinery. We integrated minimalist design elements, such as sleek lines and understated colors, with family-friendly features, including ample storage and comfortable, durable materials. Each bedroom was designed with attention to privacy and comfort, while the bathrooms are spa-like, featuring marble surfaces, walk-in showers, and modern fixtures.

Layout & Functionality:

The reconfigured layout improved circulation within the home, providing a fluid and open plan for modern family living. The house now includes a spacious master suitea guest room with ensuite and two children’s bedrooms in the rooftop extension, each thoughtfully designed to balance privacy and family interaction. The additional bathroom on the top floor offers both convenience and luxury for the upper-level occupants.

Sustainability & Efficiency:

Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project. The rooftop extension includes high-performance insulation and double-glazed windows to enhance thermal efficiency. Additionally, the home’s heating system was upgraded to underfloor heating, while solar panels installed on the roof help reduce the home’s energy consumption.

Architectural Design:

Studio Malaqueen led the architectural vision, ensuring the extension and refurbishment maintained the integrity of the original structure. The rooftop addition was carefully designed to respect the architectural context of Holland Park, blending seamlessly with the surrounding properties while introducing a contemporary flair. Modern materials were thoughtfully selected to complement the existing structure, enhancing its aesthetic without overpowering the original design.
